Lava and Ice Interaction on Mars: Application of Terrestrial Observations and Laboratory Simulations;
نویسنده
چکیده
Observations of terrestrial examples of lava and ice interaction have been combined with laboratory simulations to provide a framework for investigating lava and ice interaction on Mars. Identification of largeand small-scale characteristic features will indicate whether large quantities of meltwater were trapped or whether lava flow confinement occurred. These features should also enable the distinction between interaction with glacial ice or permafrost. Relationships between lava flow morphology and eruption parameters determined by laboratory simulation can be applied to Martian deposits to estimate lava composition and effusion rate, and consequently constrain mantle processes.

Lava-loading of Ice Sheets in a Late Noachian “icy Highlands” Mars: Predictions for Meltwater Generation, Groundwater Recharge, and Resulting Landforms
Introduction: Evidence suggests that cold and dry conditions have persisted on Mars since the mid-to-late Hesperian period [1-3]. While it is likely that the climate conditions of Mars differed during the earlier Noachian period [e.g. 2], the exact nature of the martian climate during this earliest period of martian history remains unclear. Geological evidence has been interpreted by some previ...
متن کاملErosion by flowing Martian lava: New insights for Hecates Tholus from Mars Express and MER data
[1] We have used new compositional information on Martian basaltic rocks from the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit and data from new stereo imaging by the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on the Mars Express orbiter to constrain an existing analyticalnumerical computer model to assess the potential of Martian lavas to form lava channels by erosion of substrate. The basaltic rocks studied in Gu...
متن کاملInsights on lava–ice/snow interactions from large-scale basaltic melt experiments
Quantitative measurements of interactions between lava and ice/snow are critical for improving our knowledge of glaciovolcanic hazards and our ability to use glaciovolcanic deposits for paleoclimate reconstructions. However, such measurements are rare because the eruptions tend to be dangerous and not easily accessible. To address these diffi culties, we conducted a series of pilot experiments ...
متن کاملLava heating and loading of ice sheets on early Mars: Predictions for meltwater generation, groundwater recharge, and resulting landforms
Recent modeling studies of the early Mars climate predict a predominantly cold climate, characterized by the formation of regional ice sheets across the highland areas of Mars. Formation of the predicted “icy highlands” ice sheets is coincident with a peak in the volcanic flux of Mars involving the emplacement of the Late Noachian – Early Hesperian ridged plains unit. We explore the relationshi...
متن کاملFormation of outflow channels on Mars: Testing the origin of Reull Vallis in Hesperia Planum by large-scale lava-ice interactions and top-down melting
The Reull Vallis outflow channel is a segmented system of fluvial valleys which originates from the volcanic plains of the Hesperia Planum region of Mars. Explanation of the formation of the Reull Vallis outflow channel by canonical catastrophic groundwater release models faces difficulties with generating sufficient hydraulic head, requiring unreasonably high aquifer permeability, and from lim...
